About Motivational Interviewing

The founders of motivational interviewing, Drs. William R. Miller & Stephen Rollnick, state that “Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change.” Motivational interviewing addresses many different areas of change. It evolved from the addiction field and now applies to numerous behavior change areas: mental health, co-occurring disorders/dual diagnosis, primary health care (including diabetes, weight change, nutrition, medication adherence, HIV), gambling; smoking, substance abuse disorders, etc.
