Big things are coming to small towns across South Carolina. Main Street South Carolina, a program of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, announced last week the launch of Project Hometown SC, a two-year initiative designed to strengthen community identity, support local workforce stability, and enhance long-term population retention in three rural communities: Cheraw, Hartsville, and Walterboro.

Project Hometown SC is supported by a $305,000 State Economic and Infrastructure Development (SEID) award from the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission, with matching commitments from each participating municipality.

The South Carolina Office of Rural Health is excited to serve as a core partner for this project, advancing resident support systems and community stability strategies while continuing our work to support and uplift rural residents across South Carolina.

Project Hometown SC builds on existing community strengths through four primary components:

  • Local Storytelling Capacity and Workforce Development
  • Hometown Ambassador Network
  • Community Celebrations and Engagement Events
  • Resident Stability and Support Systems
